EMBODIED TRANSLATION

‘Embodying Translation’ examines a process in the context of an artistic residency in Berlin during July 2022. Its work in progress was premiered at the IUGTE Conference 2022 in Laubegg, Austria.

It explores the encounter produced at the intersection of translation studies and performing arts. Three performers from Chile developed this creative exploration by addressing the questions: What constitutes translation from a practical perspective on the rehearsal floor? How can embodiment and sensory stimuli be connected with translation? To facilitate a multilayered discussion, this article encompasses two perspectives of the process: the first from a performer’s point of view, and the second from the translator-director.


In the initial phase of this creative encounter, various aspects related to translation, such as the principles of reflection/refraction and language/cultural negotiations, were approached as creative milestones. These were achieved through online sessions with the performers. During the second part of the process, the performers’ heightened sensory awareness and consciousness raised a new question about the ways in which the body could function as a sensory receptor and processor. It also explored how interactions with external stimuli, such as sounds, images, and atmosphere, could be examined. The resulting practice proposal involved circular procedures of material translations achieved by the performers. The dialogue between performers’ physicality and pre-rehearsal material redirected the investigation towards the field of phenomenology, exploring performers’ perception in relation to non-familiar languages (sounds).


The final phase of this PaR was focused on cultural negotiations that the performers needed to navigate while working with non-familiar languages. This situation led the performers to physically reinterpret the lack of intellectual meaning in order to re interpret the sounds of non-familiar languages through physicality. Ultimately, this created a culturally interwoven experience in the rehearsal room.
